30 years: Veteran Sports Journalist/Commentator Remembered

The entire sports fraternity remembered the great football commentator, Ernest Okonkwo who died 30 years ago.

The “International Ballistic Missile” great one was in nostalgic acknowledged as a role model due to his selfless work and his contribution to the development of the game.

“He actually inspired me and many of my colleagues. He will forever be remembered” Sportpro Chairman Bayour Issah stated.

Ernest mastery of language and its extraordinary usage in football commentary was one of the best things that have ever happened to football and is presently being missed.

Recalling some of his quotes, “Yisa Sofoluwe is small, tiny but he is a wire”.

“The green white green flag is up, Nigeria flag is flying, the greatest country on top” he reminisced.

Ernest Okonkwo, a sports presenter with Radio Nigeria was popular for his unique style commentary of football matches.

Ernest who died on August 7th, 1990 is renowned for crafting many Nigerian players’ humor-like names in consonance with their style of playing, which oftentimes normally galvanize them into their best to deliver a top-notch performance.
