The legacy of Swiss basketball pioneer Éliane Girod has been revived through a special initiative by the FIBA Foundation. Girod was a key member of Chêne-Bougeries, the dominant team that won 13 consecutive Swiss championships between 1942 and 1954.
Girod was among three players from the club selected to represent Switzerland at the EuroBasket Women 1952 and the inaugural 1953 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. Decades later, her personal basketball memorabilia and diary from the historic tournament were preserved and donated to the FIBA Foundation with the support of her family and former teammates.
The initiative, titled “La Valise d’Éliane,” celebrates the women who took part in the pioneering competition, highlighting their courage as they travelled across continents and challenged societal stereotypes at a time when women’s participation in sport faced significant resistance.
Their remarkable journey took them from Geneva through cities such as Paris, Lisbon, Dakar and Rio before reaching Santiago, Chile. The story reflects a period shaped by post-war transformation and global tensions, while honouring Girod’s enduring passion for basketball and her role in inspiring future generations of female athletes.
