Vandrezzer football club have arrived Abeokuta, Ogun State for their Nigeria National League (NNL) Matchday 21 fixture against Nilayo FC via Lagos-Ibadan railway.
The Lions’ 28-man contingent of 18 players and 10 officials departed Mobolaji Johnson Station at Alagomeji Ebute – Meta Lagos at 8.15am and arrived Wole Soyinka Station in Abeokuta by 9.30am.
In line with the club’s vision of bringing innovations to football development in Nigeria, VFC became the first football club in the country to use the standard gauge railway service since it began full operation in June 2021.
Arriving Abeokuta, Team Manager, Fatai Olayinka says VFC will continue to explore avenues that will bring the best out of the players:
“The welfare of our players and technical crew is very crucial to the progress of this football club.
“We saw how the team struggled on Sunday against Nnewi United which was as a result of tired legs, having played on Thursday and then again, on Sunday. Traveling by train is very smooth and comfortable for the players and the club as well.
“We want to thank Mr President for initiating this project and we will make use of the facility for our trips. We urge other clubs to take advantage of this innovation to reduce road accidents.”
Head coach Tony Bolus says the train ride was a wonderful experience and thanks the club management for the gesture:
“We have a very innovative and caring management to have thought of this and I am never short of appreciation for the excellent leadership. The train ride was very relaxing and stress free which is great for the team. I’m sure the boys would be fired up for Sunday.”
VFC will take on Nilayo FC in Abeokuta on Sunday.
