Super Eagles attacker Ademola Lookman has finally made his decision on his future, choosing to join Atlético Madrid from Atalanta, Soccernet.ng reports. The 28-year-old opted for the Spanish LaLiga giants over Turkish side Fenerbahçe, ending weeks of speculation surrounding his next move.
Sources close to the deal revealed that direct talks with Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone played a decisive role in Lookman’s choice. According to Nigerian journalist Buchi Laba, the forward held an extensive discussion with Simeone that lasted nearly an hour, during which the coach explained in detail how Lookman would fit into Atlético’s tactical setup. The clarity of the project and the promise of a defined role convinced Lookman to prioritise LaLiga over Turkey.
Atlético Madrid’s interest in Lookman has been long-standing. The club monitored the Nigerian international throughout last season alongside Inter Milan, underlining their sustained pursuit. That interest has now translated into action, with Atlético reaching a full agreement with Atalanta on the transfer fee, allowing Lookman to prepare for his medicals in Spain. While Fenerbahçe reportedly improved their wage offer, Atlético’s early agreement and structured plan gave the deal greater security.
Lookman was also determined to leave Atalanta without uncertainty. Laba disclosed that the winger was keen to avoid a repeat of last season’s failed move to Inter Milan and did not want to risk delays by waiting for other offers. As a result, he made a swift and decisive choice to join Atlético Madrid, where he is expected to strengthen Diego Simeone’s squad for the remainder of the season. An official announcement is now expected after his medical.
