Chris Armas, a former New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC coach, is expected to join Ralf Rangnick’s coaching staff at Manchester United.
Armas, who previously worked with Rangnick at the New York Red Bulls, will join Man United pending approval of his visa. It is understood that the situation regarding a work permit has not been resolved completely.
The 49-year-old could be one of up to four new additions to Rangnick’s backroom staff, although well-placed sources at Old Trafford have cautioned that the number of arrivals may be limited.
Mike Phelan, who served as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s No. 2, first-team coach Kieran McKenna, assistant Martyn Pert, goalkeeping coach Richard Hartis, and set-piece and individual development coach Eric Ramsay all remain at the club, although changes are possible.
Rangnick previously served as the head of sport and development for Red Bull’s stable of football clubs, while Armas served as the head coach in New York.
Armas, a former midfielder for the Los Angeles Galaxy, Chicago Fire, and US national team, was in charge of the New York Red Bulls for just over two years before stepping down last September. He led Toronto for just 11 matches before being fired in July.
When he was asked about his plans for United’s existing coaching staff and any potential additions last week, Rangnick said: “About the coaching, I’m more than happy to work with them. I need their expertise and experience regarding the current squad. I want to find one, two, or three to join us but due to Brexit, it’s not that easy.
“Many of my former employers are tied up in long-term contracts with big clubs so they are not available right now. We need to be smart and clever, hopefully in one or two weeks but I don’t know.”
