The 3rd Ibadan Cycling Competition showcased the depth of cycling talent in South-West Nigeria, with Oyo State athletes dominating the prestigious event. The competition’s highlight came in the premier Under 18 category, where Ajibade Ibrahim claimed victory in the 20km road race with an impressive time of 34.21 minutes, while Akinola Destiny conquered the Under 15 division with a commanding performance in the 16km event.

The event demonstrated remarkable gender inclusivity, featuring strong performances across both male and female categories. Notable victories included Ikatt Eunice in the Under 18 female category and impressive showings from young talents like Adam Bello and Aminu Olamiposi in the Under 10 divisions, highlighting the bright future of cycling in the region.

Drawing 120 cyclists from four states – Oyo, Osun, Lagos, and Ogun – the competition served its purpose as a vital talent identification platform. Convener Adebayo Olawale expressed his satisfaction with the event’s impact, stating, “I’m thrilled to see what we have achieved in promoting young cycling talents. The competition was fiercely contested, allowing participants to identify their strengths and weaknesses.”

Looking toward the future, the organizers have set ambitious goals for cycling development in the region. “In 2025, we aim to enhance cycling talent discovery and development in Oyo State by building on our strengths, addressing weaknesses, and expanding initiatives,” Olawale affirmed, underlining the competition’s role in nurturing the next generation of Nigerian cycling champions.
