Former Technical Committee Member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Barrister Austel Elumelu, has commended Coach Marcello Anyanwu, a Nigerian-born UAE-based tactician, for his outstanding efforts in providing platforms for Nigerian players to shine in the United Arab Emirates football league.
Elumelu, speaking from Dubai, where he is rounding off his holiday, described Marcello as “a true ambassador with a sharp eye for talent and a deep commitment to youth development.” He emphasized the coach’s dedication to grooming Nigerian footballers and elevating them to international standards.
“When I visited Gulf United Football Club’s office in Dubai, I saw firsthand the respect and admiration the staff and players have for Marcello. They called him ‘the African legend’, title that echoed in training grounds and match venues. It’s clear he commands great influence and respect,” Elumelu stated.
Marcello Anyanwu has been an integral part of Gulf United FC’s technical crew, contributing to the club’s impressive back-to-back promotion, winning the UAE Division 3 League in the 2021/2022 season and the Division 2 League in 2022/2023.
A Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON) Ambassador, Marcello is lauded for his methodical approach to coaching, guiding players from basic drills to complex tactical understanding. Elumelu further praised him as someone with the “tenacity to nurture raw talent and elevate players to reach their full potential.”
When asked about Elumelu’s visit, Marcello expressed deep appreciation:
“Barrister Austel Elumelu is a great man and a boss I hold in high regard. His visit meant so much to me, it’s a memory I will cherish for life. His support and encouragement to Nigerian and African players here in the UAE are priceless,” Marcello said.
Reaffirming his commitment to grassroots development and international opportunities for Nigerian athletes, he added:
“I will continue to use my role as Assistant Coach and Head Scout of Gulf United FC, Dubai, to create openings for talented Nigerian players. It’s my way of giving back and helping to grow the game we all love.”
