The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially appointed Eric Sékou Chelle as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles. The decision, endorsed by the NFF Executive Committee on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, follows a recommendation by the federation’s Technical and Development Sub-Committee.
Chelle, a former Head Coach of Mali’s senior men’s national team, brings a wealth of experience to the Super Eagles. During his tenure with the Aiglons, he led the team to an impressive performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire, narrowly missing a semi-final spot after a dramatic 2-1 loss to the hosts in extra time.
The 47-year-old Chelle enjoyed a notable playing career in France, representing clubs like Valenciennes, Lens, and Martigues and earning five international caps for Mali. His coaching résumé includes stints with GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran before he took charge of Mali in 2022.
With his appointment effective immediately, Chelle is tasked with securing the Super Eagles’ qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His first major test will be the decisive Matchdays 5 and 6 of the qualifiers, scheduled for March.
The NFF’s decision underscores its commitment to elevating the Super Eagles’ performance on the global stage, entrusting Chelle to bring his tactical expertise and leadership to the team.
