The House of Representatives has called for increased budgetary allocation to the sports sector in order to accelerate the achievement of Nigeria’s sports development goals and strengthen the country’s growing reputation on the global stage.
This position was made known during the National Sports Commission (NSC) 2026 budget defence before the House Committee on Sports, where lawmakers commended the Commission for its prudent use of resources and the visible progress recorded across various sporting initiatives in the country. Members of the committee emphasized that both adequate funding and disciplined implementation of budgetary provisions are essential for sustaining the current momentum in the sector.
Presenting the Commission’s proposal, Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, explained that the 2026 budget is designed to consolidate recent achievements while laying the groundwork for long-term sports development in Nigeria.
According to him, the Commission’s strategy is anchored on a renewed vision to reposition Nigerian sports through accountability, innovation, and measurable impact.
He stated that the Commission is focused on resetting, refocusing, and relaunching the sports sector, with priority areas including infrastructure renewal, youth talent development, and strengthening the sports economy.
Dikko noted that sports in Nigeria is increasingly being recognized not just as recreation, but as a viable economic driver with strong commercial potential capable of attracting private-sector investment.
As part of efforts to improve sports infrastructure nationwide, the NSC is currently collaborating with several state governments, including Bayelsa, Kaduna, and Sokoto, to remodel and upgrade existing sports facilities to meet international standards.
Also speaking during the session, Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, highlighted Nigeria’s recent successes in international competitions and stressed the importance of sustained institutional support to maintain progress.
He acknowledged the role of the Federal Government, the National Assembly, and Nigerians in supporting the growth of sports, adding that the Commission’s immediate priority is to deepen athlete preparation, provide timely support for upcoming international competitions, and build on the momentum already achieved.
The budget defence reflects a broader national commitment to reposition sports as a strategic sector for youth empowerment, economic growth, national unity, and global recognition, reinforcing the belief that sustained investment in sports will continue to yield lasting benefits for Nigeria.
