For more than a century, the Lagos FA Cup, formerly known as the Lagos War Memorial Cup since 1918, has stood as a powerful symbol of football tradition in Nigeria. As the nation’s oldest football competition and the official qualifying tournament for the Federation Cup, it has remained a stage where dreams begin, talents emerge, and history is written.
Across generations, this prestigious competition has served as a bridge between grassroots football and the professional game, nurturing players, inspiring communities, and strengthening Lagos’ identity as a heartbeat of Nigerian football.
In a bold step to preserve this legacy while embracing cultural pride, the Lagos State Football Association has unveiled a newly designed trophy inspired by the iconic Eyo Masquerade — a timeless representation of Lagos heritage, dignity, and identity. The design reflects both history and honor, connecting football excellence with the cultural soul of Lagos State.
Despite this evolution, tradition remains firmly rooted. The final matches of the Lagos FA Cup will continue to be played at the historic Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, a venue that has witnessed decades of football memories, legendary performances, and defining moments in Nigerian sports.
To further preserve the prestige of the competition, the Lagos State Football Association began producing two trophy replicas in September 2025. A 3-foot Giant Trophy, funded by 54footballx, will be formally presented to His Excellency, Governor Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu, through the Office of the Director-General for Sports, where it will remain permanently in the custody of Lagos State’s highest office. Alongside it, a 1.5-foot trophy will be awarded annually to the competition winner and returned to the Association after eight weeks, in keeping with long-standing football tradition.
This initiative represents more than a redesign of silverware, it is a reaffirmation of Lagos State’s leadership in sports development, its respect for history, and its commitment to the future of football.
In his remarks, the Director-General of Lagos State Sports, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, commended the Lagos State Football Association for its forward-thinking approach, describing the project as a model of innovation and responsibility expected from sports associations across the state.
As the Lagos FA Cup continues its journey into the future, the message remains clear: tradition lives on, culture stands proud, and football in Lagos continues to inspire generations yet to come.
