As preparations intensify for the 19th Lagos Supremacy Cup, organizers have announced the tournament’s unique rules, setting it apart as one of Nigeria’s most refreshing youth football events. This prestigious tournament will take place at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, from November 27 to 30, 2024, featuring 10 elite teams. Hajji Gafar Liameed, the tournament’s Chief Convener, shared that each game will last 30 minutes per half and, in an interesting twist, will have no offside calls, a change aimed at minimizing game stoppages and increasing scoring opportunities.
Hajji Gafar, also the Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association, emphasized the tournament’s importance for Nigerian youth football development. “Our core concept is to continue to present more opportunities for youth footballers in Nigeria,” he explained. With only 69 spots across Nigeria’s U15, U17, and U20 national teams, he pointed out, most aspiring young players lack national-level exposure. “Where do we place other one million active semi-professional boys?” he asked, adding that the Supremacy Cup serves as a platform for showcasing overlooked talent.
The tournament will host 10 select teams, chosen based on their history of talent development and top player discoveries. Featured teams include 36 Lion FC, Dino FC, Ikorodu City FC, and Real Saphire FC, among others. Each team’s strong track record in nurturing talent promises intense competition. “The invited clubs have been painstakingly chosen to ensure we spotlight Nigeria’s brightest young players,” Hajji Gafar said.
In addition to providing a stage for Nigerian youth players, the Lagos Supremacy Cup will attract scouts from 10 countries across Europe and South America, offering players a potential gateway to international opportunities. With its unique format and top-level participation, the Lagos Supremacy Cup continues to solidify its role in driving the future of youth football in Nigeria.
