The Lagos State Scrabble and Monopoly Association (LASSMA) has officially introduced a Scrabble and Monopoly Sport initiative at Atunrase Senior and Junior High Schools in Surulere, Lagos. The event was led by Engr Monsuru Dipo Akanbi, LASSMA Chairman and alumnus of Atunrase Boys’ High School, alongside Miss Oluwatosin Solademi, the Association’s Vice-Secretary, and Enoch Nwali, the 2023 African Scrabble Champion.
The LASSMA delegation engaged students with a hands-on introduction to the principles and rules of Scrabble, aiming to inspire a new generation of competitive players.
Speaking on the initiative, Engr. Akanbi emphasized the importance of nurturing young talent through early exposure to intellectual sports.
“LASSMA is committed to identifying and cultivating young talents. This launch at Atunrase schools aligns with Lagos State’s TEAMS+ objectives and is personally meaningful as it brings me back to my alma mater,” Akanbi stated. “We will work closely with school leadership to integrate Scrabble and Monopoly into their routines without interfering with academic schedules.”
Students showed remarkable enthusiasm during the training session, eagerly absorbing the intricacies of Scrabble. Plans are underway to ensure these intellectual sports become a staple at the school, fostering both academic and extracurricular development.
The event was graced by notable alumni, including Adewale Adelowo, Andrew Onwemeli, Tony Thomas Odudu, Chinedu Asadu, and Kazeem Ajibola Shoyebo, who expressed pride in supporting this groundbreaking initiative.
