The NSC training grants Nigerian athletes initiative has received a major boost as the National Sports Commission (NSC) disbursed over ₦200 million to 26 elite athletes preparing for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The grants, distributed through the Commission’s Elite and Podium Board, are designed to support training, preparation, and performance development for both home-based and foreign-based athletes across multiple sports.
According to the NSC, beneficiaries were selected from athletics, wrestling, weightlifting, taekwondo, powerlifting, para table tennis, para athletics, and para badminton, following a rigorous evaluation process conducted by the Board.
Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, said the funding reflects the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to athlete welfare and high-performance sports development.
“Mr President has increased support for sports because he believes strongly in the potential of Nigerian athletes,” Olopade said.
The Commission explained that the NSC training grants Nigerian athletes programme forms part of preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games and future global competitions, including the Olympic Games.
This latest payment represents the second athlete-grant disbursement in six months, signalling a shift toward institutionalised funding support for elite Nigerian athletes.
