Shooting Stars’ Technical Adviser Gbenga Ogunbote provided a transparent overview of the team’s current state, addressing recent performance challenges and strategic considerations. “We had some issues (injuries). We are just managing some of our players,” he acknowledged, highlighting the team’s transitional phase.
The coach pointed out player management complexities, noting Ikouwem Utin’s recent return after a five-match absence. “In today’s game (against Abia Warriors), I think we switched off in the second half,” Ogunbote candidly admitted while expressing relief at maintaining their two-goal advantage.
Player recruitment emerged as a critical focus, with Ogunbote explaining the limitations of the transfer window. “What we are trying to do is manage what we have; by the mid-season break, we should be able to bring in new players, especially in the attack, so that we can get stronger.”
The goalkeeping department received particular praise, with Ogunbote confidently stating, “We kept Mustapha there to do the job. I can tell you confidently that the goalkeeping department is one of our strongest departments. All the goalkeepers are reliable.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming derby against Sunshine Stars, the coach demonstrated determination and respect. “It’s unfortunate we lost the first two derbies… This is another opportunity to get it right,” he stated. Despite previous setbacks, Ogunbote remains optimistic about the team’s league aspirations, asserting, “It is still very realistic. We have just played 15 games, we still have about 23 games to go.”
