    The 9th edition of the TOE Ekechi Imerienwe/Upe Unity Cup concluded dramatically as Team Upe claimed their maiden championship with a narrow 1-0 victory over Team Umunam. Held at the Central School Field, Imerienwe, on December 31, 2024, the finale lived up to its billing, providing an intense display of grassroots football.

    Goodluck Chidera Ezefuna’s early first-half goal proved decisive, showcasing his composure and precision under pressure. Despite relentless attempts by Team Umunam to equalize, Upe’s resolute defence and disciplined tactics secured the historic win. The tightly contested match captivated fans and underlined the tournament’s reputation as a breeding ground for local football talent.

    The tournament’s sponsor, Honourable Okenze Tobias Ekechi, received a special recognition award from the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Imo Chapter, naming him the Grassroots Talent Hunt Promoter of the Year. Individual accolades celebrated exceptional performances, including the Highest Goal Scorer award for Philip Maduwuba, the Golden Glove for Ajaero Ikenna, and the MVP title for Chimeremeze Nkwocha. Veteran players Louis Amako (56) and Chukwuma Eze (62) were also honored for their enduring contributions to the sport.

    Team awards highlighted collective accomplishments, with Team Umunam recognized as the Most Promising Team and Team Umuoye taking third place. Upe was lauded as the Most Improved Team and celebrated as 2024 champions.
