African women’s long jump champion, Ese Brume, has expressed her displeasure at the treatment received from the federal government following her heroic act for the country at the 2019 World Athletics Championship where she won the country’s first medal in six years.
The Delta State born athlete, won a bronze medal for Nigeria in the long jump at the 17th edition of the Championships which was held between September 27 and October 6 in Doha, Qatar but three months after achieving the feat, she is yet to be officially received or recognised by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Ese, who was given a surprise welcome back ceremony at the airport in Cyprus by her school, the Eastern Mediterranean University, on her return from Doha, is an unhappy figure for being neglected having returned to the country since last month.
Speaking as a guest on a morning sports show on Boxing Day, the 23-year-old disclosed that nobody from the Youth and Sports Ministry or the Federal Government has contacted her since she returned to the country.
‘I have been in Nigeria for one month now. I have had no official reception or recognition by the Federal Government” Ese said.
The 5ft 6in tall athlete also won a gold medal for Nigeria at the African Junior Championships in the triple jump while she also has a bronze medal from the 100m event of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
