Oyo State Government Takes Over Management of Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Promises Enhanced Sports Development

Oyo State has officially assumed management of the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, previously under federal control, marking a significant step toward improving the state’s sports infrastructure. This transfer will facilitate enhanced maintenance, upgraded facilities, and increased utilization of the stadium, fostering a vibrant sports culture in the region.

The move aligns with the federal government’s strategy to decentralize sports development, empowering state governments to take ownership and responsibility for sports facilities. With a seating capacity of over 20,000, the newly renamed Liberty Stadium is set to become a premier venue for international sports events, concerts, and other activities, generating substantial revenue and stimulating economic growth.

The renovation and modernization of the stadium will not only create jobs but also boost the local economy. This transformation aims to establish Oyo State as a leader in sports and entertainment in Nigeria, attracting visitors and cementing its position as a hub for sports excellence.
